The Reaping by Ratgirlstudios The Reaping by Ratgirlstudios
A quick digital drawing of Katniss taking Prim's place at the Reaping. On another note, you probably won't be seeing too many HG pieces from me for a while. I've done so many of them, I kind of wore myself out. I'll still be posting stuff to DA, but a little Hunger Games break is in order. I still love HG, but you can only draw the same thing so much before it wears you down.

I always draw Katniss with olive skin.  While I think Jennifer Lawrence has done a great job with Katniss, she isn't how Katniss is described or how I pictured her when reading.

I second the other comment about the skin tone--thank you!--though I also just love the despair of the moment. Even without the speech bubble, there's no question about what moment this captures. I like the varied expressions on the other girls' faces, how you have sadness but mostly surprise, a reminder that people generally accepted these tragedies quietly.

I love this. It bugs me how hard it is to find pictures of her with the right skin tone: just because they don't say how dark it is doesn't mean she automatically becomes white once you go to draw her.

Agreed. It's like with Johanna: she's also described as being olive skinned, as well as having short hair and being short. Jenna Malone fits none of those characteristics (the hair may have been a wig in the picture; I'm not sure. They haven't really had any pictures of Johanna floating around.)Hell, some people missed the fact that Rue was black and started complaining about that when the first movie was cast.

Ikr. I just wish white wasn't the standard. But it will continue to be until *white* people accept that it is and try to fix it. I believe most people of color have already realized this and I know many have done what they can to fix it.

The Hunger Games is just another one of the things I love ruined by racism. No nicer way to put it. :(

Very true. It's so aggravating. As much as I love Jennifer Lawrence as an actress, I was really angry when she was cast as Katniss. I was so annoyed that ANOTHER white actor was cast to play a poc. My mother didn't get why I was irritated, which just made me angrier.

The sick thing is that this kind of prejudice just infiltrates any kind of visual media. Vampire Diaries has two white women on it, but one has olive skin and the other is pale. They're both white but people in fandom are more forgiving of the paler character's actions. Stuff like this is freaking insane, and please don't let me start in on news coverage or I'll never shut up.

Oh my god. I totally understand your frustration. My white friends totally don't get it and my family thinks I'm overreacting. I love JL too but I just don't think she's my Katniss. And that doesn't mean I'm a picky reader and "the movie can't make everyone happy". Because the movie just made people happy who think white is the standard/best.

I see this in every visual media too. People are glad to live when slavery is over. I wish we lived in a world where all racism is over, and doesn't even exist. But hey, honestly, racism against me sort of made me who I am. It made me strong.

And you can even tell when racism (although it wasn't obvious) was involved in book. The fact that the poor people were always darker in their features (hair color, eye color, skin color) esp in District 12. And the way that all the African-Americans got clumped into District 11. Even Katniss had experienced racism against herself, the way that people only liked her because Peeta, a blonde-haired blue eyed boy liked her. And that how the wealthy people in town thought she was a Seam brat. Racism made Katniss strong, too.

Gosh, I could go on :P

I know. I'm guilty of making her too light skinned in my earlier drawings of her, but I've corrected myself and I try to get it right in all my later drawings.
